How to become a Freemason

Are you thinking of becoming a Freemason?

Men with an interest in Freemasonry are encouraged to join a Lodge near their home or place of work. If you do not know anyone in a local Lodge, seek help from the Provincial website or the Provincial Grand Secretary. It may be that a Lodge in your area will be holding an Open Day or a Gentlemen’s Evening which you may attend to get a flavour of proceedings and meet some of the members.

You will need to be at least 21 years old (except in special circumstances) and hold a belief in a Supreme Being (not necessarily the Christian God, followers of many other religions are equally welcome). You will need to demonstrate that you are of good character. Most new members are vouched for by two existing members of the Lodge who have known them for a period of time. A ballot is then held to decide whether your candidature has been accepted.

If all proceeds according to plan, you will be asked to present yourself at the Lodge and will then undergo the ancient ceremony of Initiation which has been experienced by every Mason of whatever background. Most candidates find this an unforgettable event. From that moment you are a member of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organisation, with Brethren in every part of the world and in most walks of life!

Your loyalty will normally be first to your ‘Mother Lodge’, but you will be welcome to join or visit other Lodges around the Province, the United Kingdom or even abroad. In time you will hopefully choose to expand your knowledge and experience of Freemasonry by joining other Orders, such as the Holy Royal Arch, which will continue your Masonic education and further the fellowship and enjoyment which is at the heart of Freemasonry.

Are you ready to start your Masonic journey?

If so, we look forward to hearing from you.
